More Than Just Mission Trips

Our   work   to   support   the   orphanage   in   Haiti   is   a   year-round   project. Often   people   think   that   the   only   way   to   help   is   by   going   on   a   mission trip.   In   reality,   we   need   a   large   number   of   people   giving   a   little   bit   of time   and   a   little   bit   of   money   throughout   the   year   to   adequately support the orphanage. With   enough   people   caring   about   these   children   we   support,   many people can be involved, and nobody gets overwhelmed. Here   is   a   list   of   our   activities   and   the   frequency.   We   don’t   expect   our every    team    member    to    participate    in    every    event.    It    is    more important   to   us   that   team   members   find   what   is   the   best   fit   for   them and follow through with the commitments they choose. MONTHLY   MEETINGS    -   On   the   1st   Wednesday   for   the   month   from 7:00-8:00   p.m.   Here   we   share   updates   about   the   orphanage,   discuss upcoming   plans,   prepare   for   upcoming   events,   provide   support   and guidance   for   people   who   are   planning   on   going   on   a   mission   trip, answer questions, and get to know each other better. MONTHLY   CRAFT   FAIRS    -   We   target   participating   in   1   local   craft   fair each   month.   At   these   events   we   sell   jewelry   and   other   items   that   are made   by   the   ApParent   Project    in   Haiti.   These   events   enable   us   to raise   money   for   the   ApParent   Project   and   raise   money   for   the   work we   do   with   the   orphanage.   It   also   provides   an   opportunity   for   us   to spread   awareness.   Most   craft   fairs   are   2   days   (Saturday   and   Sunday) and     last     about     12     hours     each     day.     For     team     members     who participate   in   working   at   the   craft   booth,   we   request   they   commit   to   a 6   hour   shift   on   one   of   the   days   and   only   sign   up   for   events   they   are sure they can attend. SPONSORS    -   Money   we   raise   through   the   craft   fairs   and   donations support   orphanage   development   initiatives,   our   business   expenses, and   mission   work.   Sponsor   dollars   are   100%   allocated   to   the   direct care   of   the   children.   Every   dollar   received   sponsoring   a   child   goes directly   to   Haiti   to   provide   for   the   children’s   food,   school,   and   medical care.   If   someone   is   sponsoring   a   child,   we   want   them   to   know   every cent   is   really   directly   helping   the   children.   No   sponsor   dollars   pay   for food, school, and medical care, nothing else. DONATIONS    -   We   raise   funds   separate   from   sponsors   in   order   to provide   for   the   needs   that   are   beyond   food,   education,   and   medical care.   Building   the   church   and   fixing   the   water   pump   are   examples   of the   importance   of   donations.   We   have   future   plans   for   developing better    self    sustaining    activities,    such    as    a    garden    and    potentially livestock.   These   initiatives   would   need   to   be   funded   through   received donations and our craft fair events. FRIEND-RAISING     -    We    have    a    tremendous    task    ahead    of    us    to provide   the   best   care   possible   for   the   orphanage   we   support.   The task   is   too   large   for   a   handful   of   people.   But,   by   including   friends   who have   a   loving   and   generous   heart,   we   are   able   to   spread   the   joy   of making   a   difference   and   the   workload   to   a   very   manageable   amount. To   paraphrase   -   You   get   3   ants,   they   can’t   do   nothing.   But,   you   get   3 million,   they’ll   build   you   a   cathedral.   We   need   help   bringing   in   loving people   who   are   willing   to   give   a   little   bit   of   themselves   to   make   the world of difference for these great kids in Haiti. MISSION    TRIPS     -    We    take    a    group    to    Haiti    twice    a    year,    in February/March   and   July/August.   We   help   people   plan   for   trips   so they   have   the   funds   available   when   they   want   to   go.   In   our   monthly meetings    we    answer    questions    and    share    stories    because    the thought   of   the   trip   is   usually   far   scarier   than   reality.   We   finalize   dates and   trip   plans   about   6   months   prior   to   the   trip,   with   the   first   payment for the trip being due about 5 months before the departure date.

What We Do

MONEY FOR SCHOOL August   2015   we   discovered   the   children   at   the   orphanage   did   not have   money   to   buy   uniforms   and   books.   With   the   help   of   generous people   stepping   up   and   donating,   we   were   able   to   raise   the   money needed    so    the    children    could    attend    the    first    day    of    school    in September. BUILDING A CHURCH September   2015   the   lease   for   the   church   that   the   pastor   shepherds was   non-renewed.   The   church   not   only   provided   a   place   of   worship for   the   orphanage,   but   also   for   the   surrounding   community.   Psalm 82:3   was   able   to   provide   funds   for   a   new   church   building   that   was built inside the orphanage walls and church services resumed.  FIXING WELLS FOR WATER October   2015   the   well   that   supplies   water   for   the   orphanage   broke. As   a   result,   the   children   had   to   carry   5   gallon   buckets   to   locate   water and    carry    it    back    to    the    orphanage.    With    no    transportation,    the children   had   to   walk   over   a   mile   to   available   water   multiple   times each   day   until   the   pump   was   fixed.   We   were   able   to   provide   some money  to help fix the pump for the well.
